General Purpose Fume hood are used for extracting mild acidic/alkaline or
solvents fumes during chemical reactions.General purpose fume hood also called
as “fume cupboard” or “fume closet”. Fume hood are only source of lab
ventilation Exposure controls of laboratory include equipment and
procedures designed to reduce inhalation, skin absorption, or ingestion of hazardous
materials.
A properly functioning and properly used fume hood can reduce or eliminate exposure
to volatile liquids, explosion protection, dusts, and mists. It is desirable to use
a laboratory hood when working with all hazardous substances.Fume hoods when sized
with an appropriate chemical resistant centrifugal exhaust fan will protect
laboratory staff from exposure to harmful fumes
Working principle of fume hood
The air is sucked from the front which is the open side of the cupboard, slots and
baffles direct the air flow to the atmosphere. Air foils at bottom and side edges
allows uniform air flow to the work surface with minimum turbulence. The air being
exhausted is either expelled outside the building or made safe through filtration
and fed back into the lab area. The recirculated air is not permitted to
non-laboratory areas as they are kept isolated. So that users may be protected from
hazardous fume & gases expelled during any experiment.Horizontal /vertical sash can
be used for protective shielding. There is to be an adequate volume of air available
or the fume-hood won’t be able to draw a sufficient volume of air to function
properly.
There are two type of fume hoods
Ducted Fume Hoods: These Fume Hoods are used for industrial purpose.
The air is drawn from the lab space into the fume hood and then dispersed through
ducts into the outside atmosphere.
Ductless Fume Hoods: In this Fume hood the air is treated and
recirculated instead of venting it directly to atmosphere. Fan is mounted on the top
of the hood, or below the worktop. Air is drawn through the front opening of the
hood and goes through the filter, before passing through the fan and it is
recirculated back to the workplace. For a ductless fume hood, filter medium is
essential to remove hazardous and noxious substances.Advantage of ductless
fume hood, they are mobile, energy saving and easy to install.
