Perchloric Acid Fume Hoods are designed particularly for the process involving the use of perchloric acid. The fume hood system has entire work surface, an inner water wash down system and built in drain trough provided for detailed cleaning of the hood interior. Perchloric acid is incompatible, and might react vigorously, with a variety of organic, flammable and combustive materials, such as wood, rubber, paper and greases. So, it's recommended only to use perchloric acid only. The formation of perchlorate may be a significant concern when using and storing perchloric acid. Perchlorate salts, also known as perchloric acid crystals, are immensely shock-sensitive and unstable, having a dangerous of explosion when unprotected to shocks and vibrations. Perchlorate salts are formed when perchloric is heated and as a result the vapours are allowed to condense onto a surface and dry. Perchlorates salt which could accumulate within the hood and ductwork system and become explosive. It requires wash down features to stop perchlorates salt buildup in hood and ductwork. The spray nozzle system is installed to allow complete flushing of all duct, hoodsurfaces, stack and exhaust fan.
Ductwork from perchloric acid hoods and exhaust systems should take the shortest path to the outside and should not mix with the other exhaust systems. The interior baffles can be removed for cleaning to stop the dangerous build-up of perchlorates. A visual check of the fume hood should be performed whenever the hood is used to make sure that the wash-down system is functioning correctly and air is being pulled into the hood. Regular cleaning of the perchloric acid fume hood is vital to make sure that build-ups of dust or material which can contain perchlorate salts don’t occur.
